oday is National Rum Day, so hurry down to Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar (801 9th St. NW, 202-408-1600) to enjoy a fifty percent discount on classic mojitos made with Don Q rum during happy hour in the bar.
And it’s almost time for La Tomatina Festival at Jaleo (480 7th St. NW, 202-628-7949) and its sister locations. Although the Spanish festival on which Jaleo’s tomato festival is base, takes place in the town of Bunol on the last Wednesday of August, Jaleo’s festival takes place from September 2nd to September 15th.
In Spain, the festival is a food fight that begins when 300,00 pounds of ripe tomatoes arrive in the center of town and thousands of people gather to engage in a tomato battle. Jaleo’s tomatoes will not be wasted in a food fight. Rather, the event consists of a variety of special dishes and a unique cocktail incorporating ripe and juicy tomatoes. Tapas, priced from $7 to $16, such as a tomato tart, Spanish bonitlo with tomato sauce, and white gazpacho with tomato sorbet, will be on the menu.
Up in Silver Spring, The Daily Dish (8301 Grubb Road, 301-588-6300) has come up with an easy way to prepare a summer supper: daily-dough-to-go. It’s a do-it-yourself version of the restaurant’s pizza. Each daily dough-to-go pizza kit includes house-made pizza dough, Marinara sauce and Mozzarella with complete cooking instructions. A mini version for kids is available for $5. The kits are priced at $8. Toppings are available for $1 to $3.
And don’t forget that the Washington August restaurant week is coming up on August 19 until August 25. Prices are $20.13 for lunch and $35.13 for dinner. Some restaurants are extending the special price until September 1st - for example, the French restaurant Bastille in Alexandria (1201 N. Royal St., 703-519-3776). Enjoy.
