The 8th First Thursday in Exploratorium's After Dark series is on Thursday, August 7th. They are exploring Science Fiction this time around. It's at The Exploratorium, Pier 15, beginning at 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM. This is an adults only event, 18 years and older. Tickets are the same as for general admission, $15.00 for Non-Members, $10.00 for Members, and Lab-Members are free. Keep in mind, though, that some venues have limited seating, and admission to those are on a first come first served basis.
Many science fiction writers have uncannily predicted the future. One only needs to read Jules Verne and his '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' written before submarines were standard navy vehicles, or Ray Bradbury's 'Star Trek', especially the handheld communicators...comparable to our first clunky cell phones. Come to the Exploratorium and see how the worlds of science fiction overlap scientific realities. Join Jamaican-born novelist, Nalo Hopkinson, and his racially inclusive future scenarios. Then, hook up with robotics engineer, Dave Grossman, and take a look at the history of robots. Get into a full body flight simulator, Birdly, and soar. Not exciting enough? Then take a tour through a glass brain from UCSF's Neuroscape Lab. Let Dr. Karen Kalumuck introduce you to microscopic space travelers, and join Exploratorium scientist Ron Hipschman to learn how the imagined technologies of yesterday became the reality of today. Fill it all in with fascinating glowing plants, musical sand, sentient gardens, and, really, there are so much more truths stranger than fiction. Find them at Thursday's After Dark.
There is a cash bar and snacks, so bring some change, bring a date, or just bring yourself. If you love science fiction, and, perhaps, have wanted to write a story, a novella, a novel, the Exploratorium on Thursday, August 7th is the place to be for your inspiration. You could even come early, for the ticket for this event is the price of admission, and check out some of the other fascinating exhibits. The Exploratorium is not just for kids. It's a place where you can always learn something new, stimulate those brain cells, and have fun all at once. Stay for 'After Dark', and you can have a drink and some snacks to boot!
Come on out to Pier 15 on Thurs, August 7th, walk through Fujiko Nakaya's 'Fog Bridge' between Piers 15 and 17, and enjoy a night with some science fiction...and fact!
