The U.S. economy gained 169,000 jobs in August 2013 while the unemployment rate edged down to 7.3 percent and the number of unemployed persons dropped to 11.3 million, according to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — AUGUST 2013’ report released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The BLS report found that employment rose in retail trade, health care, food and drinking places, professional and business services, and wholesale trade during August 2013. Over the past 12 months, employment growth has averaged 184,000 jobs per month.
Among specific industry sectors, the report found retail trade employment added 44,000 jobs in August 2013 and has added 393,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
Health care employment increased by 33,000 jobs in August 2013 with 27,000 of those jobs added in ambulatory care services.
Professional and business services employment added 23,000 jobs in August 2013 and has added 614,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
Leisure and hospitality employment in food services and drinking places increased by 21,000 jobs in August 2013 and by 354,000 jobs over the year.
Financial activities employment increased by 15,000 jobs in August 2013 and has added 120,000 jobs over the year.
Wholesale trade employment increased by 8,000 jobs in August 2013 and the industry has added 83,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
Within the manufacturing sector, employment in motor vehicles and parts rose by 19,000 jobs in August 2013 and auto manufacturers have added 34,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
Within the information sector, employment in the motion picture and sound recording industry lost 22,000 jobs in August 2013.
Employment in other major industries including mining and logging, construction, transportation and warehousing, financial activities, and government, showed little or no change in August 2013.
The August 2013 report also revised the change in total nonfarm payroll employment for June 2013 from 188,000 jobs added down to 172,000 jobs added while the change for July 2013 was revised from 162,000 jobs added down to 104,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in June 2013 and July 2013 combined were 74,000 jobs less than previously reported.
