Date Night is a screwball comedy written by Josh Klausner and directed by Shawn Levy. Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire Foster (Tiny Fey) are an ordinary couple who live in their New Jersey home with their children Oliver (Jonathan Morgan Heit) and Charlotte (Savannah Paige Rae). Phil is a tax lawyer and Claire is a realtor. Their married life has become mundane where most of their time is spent working or caring for the children. They do try to spend some alone time by having a "date night," but that too is fairly routine.
When Phil and Claire hear that their best friends Brad (Mark Ruffalo) and Haley Sullivan (Kristen Wiig) have also reached a lull in their marriage and are getting divorced, they become concerned their own marriage is headed down the same path. To spice up the next "date night," Phil and Claire dress up and head into Manhattan to eat at the trendy upscale Claw restaurant.
Phil and Claire arrive at Claw without making a reservation beforehand. The haughty maître d' (Nick Kroll) gives them a disdained look and sends them off to the bar to wait for a table. Claire wants to leave, but Phil wants to stay so they can have a special night together. When the hostess (Olivia Munn) calls out for the Tripplehorns and no one responds, Phil makes an impromptu decision to pretend to be the Tripplehorns and take their reservation.
The evening starts out well. Phil and Claire are having a great time and even sight the celebrity will.i.am. They have fun taking pictures of Claire going near will.i.am. Right as they are about to finish with their meal, two tough-looking men Collins (Common) and Armstrong (Jimmi Simpson) approach them and tell them that they are in trouble. Phil and Claire think they have been busted for stealing the reservation and follow the men out. However, to their surprise, they get frisked and Armstrong points a gun at them, demanding for the flash drive they stole from mob boss Joe Miletto (Ray Liotta). Perplexed, they deny any knowledge, but when the situation intensifies, Phil tells them he has hidden it inside a boathouse at Central Park.
The foursome head over to Central Park and Phil manages to outwit them at the boathouse. Phil and Claire make a run for it and head straight to the police station. When they realize that Detective Arroyo (Taraji P. Henson) and the rest of the police cannot help them, the only answer is to find out the "real" identity of the Tripplehorns. They backtrack to Claw and manage to get the Tripplehorns' phone number. Claire remembers a former client is a security expert and she thinks he can help them. They head over to see the sexy Holbrooke Grant (Mark Wahlberg) and Phil becomes jealous when Claire flirts with him. They do manage to trace the number to Tom Felton and race off in Grant's Audi R8 just as Collins and Armstrong arrive.
Upon meeting Tom "Taste" Felton (James Franco) and Whippit (Mila Kunis), Phil threatens them with a gun he stole from Grant's place and demands to know the flash drive's whereabouts. The Feltons realize the gig is up and they hand over the flash drive. They make a quick escape and leave Phil and Claire bewildered in Felton's apartment. As soon as Phil and Claire leave the apartment, they get shot at by Collins and Armstrong and ram the Audi into a taxi, freaking out a poor taxi driver (J.B. Smoove). With "date night" now officially a date disaster and Collins and Armstrong hot on their heels, they must find a way to get themselves out of this mess quickly if they are ever to have another "date night" again.
