Augmented Reality - Summary

I've been distracted the past few months by life events and I am feeling the urge to get back in the swing of things.  This post will be a short and sweet post to accomplish that.

You may have noticed that Augmented Reality is an interest of this blog, and the amazing things that are being done via apps in the, still, infancy of smart mobile devices.  Being based in DC, augmented reality is doubly appealing.  The reality of our politics could sure use augmenting, and, of course, just how cool these apps are.

Scientific American recently mentioned several we have covered here and also mentioned a few others we had not heard of.  So, for those of you who share this interest, check out any of the following.

  • Say Color or Color ID - especially for the color blind, speaks color of what camera is viewing
  • Word Lens - Instant, in the camera viewer, translation
  • Metro AR - see colorful arrows indicating Metro subway routes for many cities.
  • Layar and Wikitude overlay icons for information of your choice: real estate listings, ATM locations, places with Wikipedia entries, public works of art, and so on. Layar boasts thousands of such overlays
  • Golfscape GPS Rangefinder - shows you where the hazards are on golf courses
  • Augmented Car Finder - where you parked your car
  • Tweet360 -  who’s using Twitter in the buildings around you
  • ZipRealty - what houses are for sale near you and for how much
  • Yelp - quality and prices at restaurants
  • Star Walk - the names of the stars and constellations over your head
  • SpotCrime - what crimes have recently been committed in the neighborhoods around you

And many more.  Please share your favorites in a comment.

Good to be back.
