Here's a fun way to mix up your homeschooling, add in a little nature study and start a new holiday tradition -- plus help with bird conservation at the same time.
The Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count starts today, with various cities around North America planning events to count birds in their areas.
The count runs from Dec. 14, 2011, through Jan. 5, 2012. Families and students, amateur birders and professional ornithologists are all welcome in this 112-year old annual mission to count the number and species of birds in your local area on a given day.
This count is different from the back yard bird count later in the year. While that count involves people noting the number and kinds of birds in any area at a certain time and location each day (including your own back yard), this count involves groups working together on a given day with specific instructions.
In Mankato, the count is taking place on Saturday, December 17. The Mankato group says:
Hello out there. The Mankato CBC will be gathering at 589 Forest Heights Drive in North Mankato, MN at 7:30 AM for coffee and information about the portion of the circle each will be responsible for. A tally-rally will happen around 4:00 PM at the same location.
There is a $5 fee to participate in the bird count for all field participants aged 19 or older. Check out the Audubon Society's website to find the posted date for a count near you.
