The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra has announced auditions for the 2013-14 season. The auditions will take place at Severance Hall located at 11001 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106 and will be held during the month of May. There will be late afternoon, evening and weekend audition times available.
The auditions are opened to all Middle and High School student instrumentalists who are studying privately and are involved with their school music programs. Auditions are open for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, (alternate position), flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone (alternate position), percussion and keyboard instruments.
The application fee is $25 and audition applications must be received by Friday, April 5, 2013. During the 2013-14 season, the Youth Orchestra will give three performances at Severance Hall as well as concerts in the greater Cleveland community.
Members of The Cleveland Orchestra serving as coaches to the Youth Orchestra and leading weekly sectional rehearsals include: William Preucil, Yoko Moore, and Emilio Llinas (violin), Lynne Ramsey, Stanley Konopka, and Mark Jackobs (viola), Richard Weiss and David Alan Harrell (cello), Mark Atherton (bass), Marisela Sager (flute/woodwinds), Frank Rosenwein and Jeffrey Rathbun (oboe/woodwinds), Robert Woolfrey (clarinet/woodwinds), Jonathan Sherwin (bassoon/woodwinds), Richard Stout (brass), Hans Clebsch (horn/brass), Lyle Steelman (trumpet), and Marc Damoulakis (timpani/percussion).
The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, now in its twenty-seventh season, is a full, 100-member symphony orchestra of young musicians from 41 communities in 13 counties of Ohio. The ensemble was one of five youth orchestras chosen to participate in the National Youth Orchestra Festival at Michigan’s Interlochen Center for the Arts in June 1998. In March 2001, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra made its debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall, as part of the Carnegie Hall Family Concert Series, and at Penn State University’s Eisenhower Auditorium.
In June 2009, the Youth Orchestra traveled on a six-day, four-concert tour to Boston, Massachusetts and its surroundings. In June 2012, the Youth Orchestra made their first international appearances with a tour that included concerts in Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg.
The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is supported by generous grants from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and the Surdna Foundation, and by many other donors. Endowment support is provided by The George Gund Foundation, the Estate of Jules and Ruth Vinney, and Christine Gitlin Miles.
