This isn't the car to use for the annual vacation or for taking your best girlfriend out on a hot date --- and it certainly won't do the job when you are off to buy a big flat-screem tv,.
But it could be an ideal vehicle for a couple who live in a big city and need to navigate its crowded streets by car from time to time. It might even work in the suburbs as an errand car.
It is the electric-powered Audi Urban Concept, and it will be on display at the Frankfurt Auto Show starting this weekend.
Like all car builders, Audi is constantly on the lookout for a vehicle that will meet an unfulfilled need. The auto show will give the German manufacturer the opportunity to test crowd reaction.
Small, ultra- light and sporty, according to its builderi, the Urban Concept has a design like no other Audi It is envisioned as a hatchback and a convertible. It is a two-seater, one in front and one staggered slightly to the right in back . The 21-inch wheels are covered by cycle-like fenders.
To minimize weight, the cockpit is made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer that joins the undercarriage of both seats.
Drivers of different sizes can adjust the steering wheel and pedals to for maximum comfort and controllability. The doors open diagonally upward.
Power is supplied by two electric motors, which allow the Urban Concept to accelerate quickly. The electricity comes from lithium-in batteries that, according to the manufacturer, should be able to power the car on "extended city tours."
It's an interesting idea, for sure, but don't expect to see one driving past you anytime soon.
