From the rare 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan to the high performance Ferrari, muscle cars, and rat rods, the action at the 24th annual Ocean City classic car auction. The auction, part of the four day Cruizin' Ocean City 2014 presented by Special Event Production Inc., held May 15-18, 2014. The action was fast and exciting as bids rose to $100,000. Several hundred bidders and spectators took part in the two day auction at the Ocean City Convention Center. Those in attendance witnessed many of the cars offered on Thursday, that didn’t meet the sellers reserve, offered again on Friday.
Express Auctioneers managed and conducted the auction and handled the paperwork for the many cars sold during the two day event. Action was highest on a red 2001 Ferarri 550 Barchetta which didn’t meet the reserve on Thursday with a bid of $75,000. Offered again on Friday the gavel didn’t come down on a bid of $100,000, as it did not meet the sellers mark.
Other highlights were a rare Lincoln Continental convertible that purred almost silently when started. A true luxury car for its day. Reportedly one of only eight known models of this type still surviving the initial build of 1,427 models manufactured in 1949. This 65 year old car has only 76000 miles on the odometer and is in excellent original condition. It passed the block with a $50,000 bid on the table but not meeting the buyer’s reserve.
There were plenty of cars sold from Corvettes and Mercedes’ to a fine white over red 1959 Ford Galaxie Sunliner bought by yours truly. After reviewing the excellent selection of cars up for auction I set my limit and waited for the bidding. Of course after watching hours of Mecum auctions on the Velocity channel I was ready. I fell into the trap of wanting the car and being dazzled by the style and went a tad over the limit I set for myself.
After driving the car a few miles after the auction it was clear that I had bought a time-machine, reliving my “American Graffiti” days from high school. Granted there are a few touch ups needed to make the car truly road worthy but for a 55 year old car that is expected. Look for future stories on the reconstruction of this classic.
