Having secured itself a place in Detroit’s rich beer-making history, the Atwater Block Brewery is now looking to secure a more prominent place on the downtown bar circuit.

The Atwater Block Brewery, a Rivertown staple since 1997, has moved its existing brew pub into its neighboring beer warehouse, and according to a worker at the bottling plant, will open a second bar in the space once occupied by Johnny Rocket’s next to the Fox Theater. The new outlet will reportedly open by summer’s end.

As a maker of heritage-style traditional German lagers, the Atwater has become one of Detroit’s preeminent names in local beer-making. Among its wide selection of brands are the popular D-Light, Dirty Blond, and Michigan Amber, flavors that have grown to reach markets stretching from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the East Coast.

Despite its big reputation, the Atwater has long housed an old factory in a relatively low-traffic area of the city. With its move to Foxtown, the Atwater will enjoy foot traffic generated from crowds going in and out of Comerica Park, Ford Field and the Fox Theater, in addition to a busier rush of weekday lunch-goers.
