Nestled on a corner in the newly renovated and excitingly trendy downtown Fort Worth, Taverna showcases the farm-to-table concept Italian style. Taverna is a warm and inviting neighborhood restaurant that offers a truly Italian experience without having to leave Texas. Italian chefs strive to create the perfect menu using seasonal ingredients for their surprising entrees; every day a variety of northern Italian delights are presented from simple comforts such as pan seared sea bass to delicate pasta and fabulous risotto.

Our group happened upon Taverna on our recent end-of-semester outing. We have made it tradition for the Doctor of Public Health students and a few adopted PhD students to celebrate the survival of another semester enduring grueling nights of writing papers and figuring probabilities.

When I arrived, those who could arrive early were enjoying peach bellinis with a unanimous vote for fabulous! Our restaurant connoisseur, Amanda, had ordered a woodstone baked focaccia appetizer for the table topped with finely grated parmesan cheese and served with rosemary olive oil. One word, yum!

For dinner, she ordered Fiocchi Al Gorgonzola E Pera, gorgonzola and pear filled pasta with walnuts, arugula and dolce latte cream sauce. So, of course two of us had to follow suit. The dish was amazing! Since it was very rich, we two split the dish and ordered a house salad packed with tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions on a bed of mixed greens and topped with flavored vinaigrette to round out our meal.

Our remaining colleagues’ choices included, Homemade Lasagna Rustica but with the flair of spinach pasta, ham, Bolognese, béchamel and wild mushrooms rather than the traditional ingredients; and Butternut Squash Cappellicci made with brown butter, sage and tomato fondue.

We ordered three table desserts to share, Budino Di Cioccolato, a warm dark chocolate cake with chocolate filling and raspberry sauce; Lemon Cake which was the special of the night and my favorite was Nutella Marble Cheesecake with sour cherry sauce. Normally, I am not a fan of fruit desserts but the sour cherry sauce melted in your mouth alongside the flavorful cheesecake cutting the richness to perfection!

Taverna provides an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience to find a balanced mix of decadent and healthy farm-to-table fare. Taverna would be a great venue to host a group of friends, business dinner or date night. Then, balance the decadence with a walk around the newly revamped downtown to explore all that Fort Worth has to offer.
