Republican Attorney Ken Cuccinelli announced that he will run for governor of Virginia in the upcoming 2013 elections. His decision is based on the fact that he sees a 'massive task' ahead for the next governor and that it will require someone who has the experience to quickly perform in the position and hit the ground running. As Attorney General, Cuccinelli believes he is the best candidate for the job.
During his time as Attorney General, Cuccinelli quickly took on the task of opposing and fighting the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's healthcare law.
As our state and our country faces economic challenges and political turmoil, he proposes that he will be a strong successor to Governor McDonnell and he will focus on foward-movement for the state.
Cucinnelli comes with a lot of supporters and opposition as he enters the race. As he heads into the primary campaign with Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, he will have to convince voters that he is working for the people and will have to overcome some controversial issues he has raised in the past.
His announcement came via the media after notifying his colleagues of his decision via email. In his email, he states, "After much prayer and consideration, I have decided to run for governor in 2013. I have always intended to let you know before the media. Shortly after you receive this email, I will be sending a statement to the media announcing my candidacy."
At this point, Governor McDonnell plans to back Bolling in the election for governor. Cuccinelli has no plans to step down as Attorney General during the campaign process.
