Attman’s Deli Makes Charitable Bet with San Francisco Deli On Super Bowl Outcome (Photos)

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco Forty Niners won’t be the only ones in competition on Super Bowl Sunday.

Baltimore’s Attman’s Deli, the nation’s oldest family-owned Jewish delicatessen, has entered into a benevolent bet with San Francisco’s Miller’s East Coast Delicatessen on which football team will win. The losing deli will donate $500 to a Jewish charity of choice in the winning team’s city.

Robby Morgenstein of Miller’s suggested the bet, after wagering with a Detroit deli owner on the outcome of the 2012 World Series. When the Giants won, the Jewish Home of San Francisco benefited.

Attman’s Owner Marc Attman, a long-time football fan who has operated the Attman’s booth at M&T Bank Stadium since 2006, jumped at the chance to wager and beat Miller’s in the Super Bowl bet.

“We’re competitive in the deli industry, but also very committed to giving back to the community,” Attman said. “We thought this would be a fun way to show our confidence in the Ravens, while helping those in need at the same time.”

For three generations, the Attman family has owned and operated the deli, earning a host of accolades from loyal customers and the media. When USA TODAY asked food guidebook publisher Zagat to identify the nation's top sandwich shops in 2012, Attman’s was named “Baltimore’s Best.”

What’s more, Delta Sky Magazine proclaimed Attman’s “A Place to Visit.” Southern Living declared it “Best Deli and Best Corned Beef Sandwich. The City Paper has proclaimed it “Best Deli” beginning in 1988. Baltimore Magazine regularly includes Attman’s in its “Baltimore’s Best” issues.

Located on Baltimore’s “Corned Beef Row,” at 1019 E. Lombard St., Attman’s features exclusive recipes for its deli items including corned beef, pastrami, roast brisket, turkey breast, salami, bologna and Kosher hot dogs.
Open daily, Attman’s is the only delicatessen in Maryland with its own private label products – including mustard and hot sauces – that are sold in area supermarkets.
