Attention San Francisco: You're Officially on Fashion Police Duty Starting Now

The winner for best picture of the year will be announced this Sunday during the 84th annual Academy Awards and if the nominated films haven’t caught your attention, maybe the red carpet fashion will. It's one of my favorite Sunday evenings of the year when I lounge around with a glass of bubbly eagerly awaiting as Hollywood’s biggest stars put their stylists to the test. As they surrender themselves to fashion critics nationwide, you’ll have the chance to judge the gowns and tuxes from the comfort of your own home.

Guys on the red carpet have it easy. However, there's always a few who take a fashion risk wearing an ill fitted tux or show up with messy hair landing themselves on the worst dressed list. I’m looking forward to see what this year’s leading men including George Clooney, Brad Pitt and a slimmed down Jonah Hill will rock on the red carpet.

Female movie stars’ looks are so much more involved when it comes to an event like the Oscars. Their glam squads have to worry about hair, makeup, body shimmer, undergarments (aka Spanx), heels, jewelry, clutches, posture while the actress has to maintain this look of ‘perfection’ throughout each interview of the night. No wonder acceptance speeches can seem so flustered and scatterbrained at times. These actresses have spent the day sucked into designer gowns answering “Who are you wearing?” hundreds of times.

Who are the women to watch this year on the red carpet? Michelle Williams, the star of My Week with Marilyn, is always glamorous; but her gowns rarely amaze me in terms of a glitz factor. What about Viola Davis? The star of The Help made an impressive run this entire awards season so I’m eager to see what she’ll be wearing. Brad Pitt, nominated for his role in Money Ball, will undoubtedly be overshadowed by Angelina Jolie. Meryl Streep is always conservative and put together as she graced the cover of Vogue last month in a pastel sheer top which is also a major spring trend. She killed it in the box office starring in The Iron Lady which she is nominated for best actress again. No big surprise there. Newcomer Octavia Spencer is another to keep your eye on, as has showed off her curves lately at events like the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes.

Are you having an Oscar party this Sunday? I have a few tips if you’re planning for an Academy Awards extravaganza. First, plan ahead and try to see a few of the movies nominated if possible which makes watching the show more entertaining. I highly recommend The Descendants starring George Clooney. It’s a tear jerker. Or head down to RedBox to rent MoneyBall or The Help; both are out on DVD right now. DVR is a life saver during these three hour long awards shows. Stay off Twitter and Facebook so the results aren’t spoiled and then start the show an hour late to skip past boring commercials and snoozefest acceptance speeches. If you’re going all out, prepare horduerves and a special arrival time for your guests to catch the pre-show red carpet interviews. Then saddle up for an evening with the stars and prepare to patrol the night’s fashion victims and red hot winners.
