Pet owners need to be aware of a recall announced by Natura Pet Products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found salmonella in one of its product lines during routine testing that is sold under various names.

The items included in the recall are:

Innova, California Natural and Mother Nature biscuits, bars and treats

EVO and Healthwise dry dog and cat food

Karma dry dog food

This recall includes all lot codes, UPCs and package sizes, and all items expiring before October 6, 2014. If you have these items, throw them out. You can get a refund but you must send the UPC labels, expiration dates and product codes found on the pet food bag and mail them to the company.

You can also obtain more information by calling 800. 224.6123.

Salmonella poses a health risk to both pets and owners who are handling the contaminated products. If your pet becomes infected, you will notice diarrhea with or without blood, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and general lethargy. Pets with salmonella poisoning can infect humans and other animals. In such cases, contact a veterinarian immediately.

If you become infected, you could experience such symptoms as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and even bloody stools, cramps and fever. In more serious cases, you could develop an arterial infection, arthritis, endocarditis, muscle pain, urinary tract infection and/or eye irritation. You will need to see your doctor as soon as possible.
