Attempt to run Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle in rain fails

One of the fallbacks oft used by road course aficionados when debating the relative merits of their preferred track style with fans of ovals is the ability to run the former in most all kinds of weather.

Today's attempt at running the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle on the streets of Sao Paulo testified this is not always the case. And then some.

The attempt to run the race was derailed by first a steady rain which rendered visibility nonexistent, particularly on the course's lengthy straightaway, then a torrential downpour. Factor in a ridiculous crash on the first corner of the first lap taking Danica Patrick, Simona de Silvestro, Tony Kaanan and Helio Castroneves out of contention, plus numerous other wrecks and spins, and you had the makings of a very poor joke albeit one decidedly unfunny.

IndyCar will attempt to get the race in tomorrow despite a weather forecast for more rain. Tuesday should be dry, but whether the league and race sponsors can afford to wait that long, especially since it will mean another day of leaving a street course in place, is questionable.
