On Wednesday, police in New York City arrested Lashawn Martin, 31, after he reportedly went on a violent rampage, targeting white people in Union Square.
Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, was knocked to the pavement, blood gushing from his head, according to witnesses.
Witnesses reported hearing Marten shout "I hate white people," just before the incredibly brutal assault.
Babbitt was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where his condition has steadily worsened, and has most recently been declared brain dead.
CBS New York reported:
Babbitt was minding his own business as he walked through the crowd near the chess boards in Union Square when a man made a hateful announcement and began his rampage, witnesses said.
"He said 'the next white person who walks by I'm going to [expletive],'" one woman said. "His fist went in and the man's head bobbed and he hit the ground and you could hear his skull hitting the ground."
Babbitt is a retired train conductor and lives with his 92-year-old mother in a Sheepshead Bay apartment.
Two other men, ages 48 and 18, also both white, were attacked by Marten as they attempted to aid Babbitt. Their injuries were minor.
Marten has been charged with felony assault and is currently being held on $1 million bail.
Of course, his charges could soon be upgraded to murder.
Police have not yet decided whether or not to charge Marten with a hate crime.
