A Florida woman who refused sexual advances from a man ended up with a broken nose and a concussion from him.
However, instead of a domestic violence charge, she had the attacker hold a sign that said “I beat women. Honk if I’m a scumbag” on a busy intersection in Tampa. She also made him wear a dunce cat and sit on a stool for eight hours, according to a report from ABC News on Dec. 18.
The woman alleged she was out with two male friends and their ‘friend’ whom she said she did not know. This friend tried to reach up her skirt in the backseat of the car on the way home from ‘clubbing.’ She told him “no” and pushed him away to no avail. It was at that time she slapped him and he started beating her.
The following morning she filed a police report and went to the hospital for her injuries.
In an unusual twist, she withdrew the complaint, found the attacker on Facebook and gave him the choice of being arrested or hold the embarrassing sign in public.
There are numerous problems with this vigilantism punishment. Sexual crimes and physical abuse are serious matters that should be addressed by the proper authorities.
This man is apparently dangerous and holding a sign for eight hours may not rehabilitate him. Nor does it confront the violent tendencies he is capable of.
Hope he doesn't strike again ...
