If you ever wondered what Attack Theatre might think up next, your guess would be as good as mine.
For fifteen years, devotees of the company - and there are quite a few - have loyally followed these dancers through each city neighborhood and back again. Anticipating an Attack show is much like walking downstairs on Christmas morning, wide eyed and wondering what great gifts sit underneath the tree.
Artistic Directors, Michele de la Reza and Peter Kope, wholeheartedly continue their search for well-meaning gifts to give their audience. Not only do they seek to surprise and inspire, but their creations are traveling farther and wider with each year.
"Site/Re-site" opens their 15th anniversary season with an exploration of the company's past.
"Mining back through our past, what was quite evident was that we had done a lot of work in the world of site specifics. We wanted to do a show that honored that," de la Reza explains.
The search for a space led them to former Strip District nightclub, Questions. Playing off the bar atmosphere, the company made a conscious decision not to line up chairs next to each other, as in a typical performance venue. Rather, the audience will be free to watch the show from the bar, the balcony or the main floor.
And what would a bar be without live music? In addition to the Attack Theatre band, led by Dave Eggar, the line-up will include Pittsburgh favorites: Daryl Fleming and the Public Domain, Chatham Baroque, and Ben Hardt and the Symphony.
"We've always been intrigued by the relationship between movement and sound," de la Reza says. "Visuals can be changed by aural landscape."
Inspired by the four different soundtracks from each band, the company wondered how it would be possible to communicate their physical language based on each sound. With the artistic license given to each musician, the result promises Attack-like humor and "teenager" rebellion.
"Site/Re-site" is just the beginning of what guarantees a season of creative play. New to the program is "Holiday Unwrapped," a "saccharin-free" celebration of the holidays, previously performed in the schools. Also on the list is "Game Night," an interactive show for our inner child, as well as collaboration with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, and new work for February. Check the Attack Theatre website for details.
"Site/Re-site" will be performed September 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 and 25. All shows at 8:00 p.m.
