Atlas FC of Guadalajara have won again, this time they downed Jaguares de Chiapas FC 2-1 at the Victor Manuel Reyna stadium to kick off week 5 action of the Clausura 2013 of La Liga MX. The zorros have won their last two games and have temporarily moved into third place with 10 points.
Isaac Brizuela and Jahir Barraza scored for the rojinegros. Colombian Luis Gabriel Rey converted from the penalty spot to give the home side the honor goal.
The victory moves Atlas farther away from the relegation zone, leaving Queretaro FC in a dangerous position. Atlas began the tournament in the relegation position but has moved up with each game. Their only blemish is a loss against undefeated Tigres UANL during week 3.
The visiting squad hit the pitch with full intent of earning another three points. From the beginning they pressured the home side. In the 11th minute Omar Bravo and Brizuela beat the defense to come face-to-face with goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez. Bravo saw Brizuela had the better shot and crossed to his teammate who put the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0.
From that point on Atlas controlled the game doing as they pleased with the ball. It took Jaguares a great effort to recover the ball from Tomas Boy’s team which went to the break with the 1-0 lead.
The locals hit the pitch for the second half looking to get on the board quickly. Within a few minutes Edgar Andrade headed the ball to the area, but defender Leandro Cufre was on mark. The Argentine cleared the ball on the line preventing the felines from closing the gap. Pedro Hernandez recovered the ball and fired past Atlas goalkeeper Miguel Pinto. To his luck, the ball hit the crossbar.
Boy made adjustments on the pitch and had his team retake control of the ball and the field. Zorros patiently defended their goal looking for an error or opening to conduct a counterstrike.
Their patience paid off in the 82nd minute when Bravo found and opening and took the ball all the way to the area. He centered to Barraza who headed the ball past the keeper to give Atlas the 2-0.
Jaguares increased their attack as they looked to get on the board for their home crowd. The pressure was too much for Atlas defender Oscar Razo who deflected the ball in the area with his hand. The referee called the penalty in favor of the local squad. Rey took the shot from the spot firing to Pinto’s left to set the final score at 2-1.
Chiapas remains in the final position of the league table with a single point. After five games Jaguares have not been able to get on track. The bad result leaves many fans to question Coach Jose Guadalupe Cruz’ abilities to lead the team.
“I am not going to resign,” Cruz told the press after the game. “If you want to know about my cessation, contact the team directive.”
Atlas hosts Atlante FC next week while Jaguares travels to La Corregidora to face Queretaro FC.
