In a town where everything is a gamble, Atlantic City will be betting on the Oscars. The 84th Academy Awards presentation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at 7 p.m. eastern time. It's a safe bet that Atlantic City's in a buzz over who's going to take home the golden statues.
Writing for Atlantic City Weekly, film critic Lori Hoffman gives her predictions. Here's a few highlights.

Most odds are probabilities, the likelihood or not that something will happen. In gambling, however, the odds on display don't represent chance, but how much the bookmaker will pay out on winning bets.
For instance, if you take the odds of 4/7 for Viola Davis as Best Actress, you divide four by seven and come up with .571. You take your bet and multiply it by that number to get your profit. If your bet is $20, you would win $11.43 plus your original wager of $20 for $31.43. Now if you hit some hot odds like 12/1 and bet the same $20, you would win 12 x $20 plus your original $20 wager back for winnings of $260.
At the Topix web site, the odds-on favorite for Best Motion Picture is The Help as of Friday night with 253 cities across the U.S. reporting in. The Help would be this Examiner's pick for Best Motion Picture on Sunday night with Viola Davis, of course, for Best Actress.
