In preparation for its 74th anniversary in December; The Plaza Theatre on Ponce de Leon is getting a renovation grant from The Fox Theatre Institute.
The Fabulous Fox is a shining example of historic preservation and the Institute aims to help preserve other historic cultural buildings and theaters throughout Georgia/
The Plaza will get $5,390 to restore the marquee; repairing rust damage and switching from flourescent to LED lighting. This will not only improve the appearance of the marquee but cost less and have a more positive environmental impact.
The Plaza; which opened in 1939 in the era of "movie palaces.: is Georgia's oldest continuously operating movie theatre and its marquee is an Atlanta landmark.
The grant and another for The President Theatre in Manchester;GA; will be formally announced at The Plaza September 23.
