So remember in Pretty Women when they went to the opera, well this is the same one, the Atlanta Opera opens with La Traviata March 2,5,8, and 10 at The Cobb Energy Centre. It wasn't until the lyrics of the number "Dammi tu forza o cielo" that I thought - Hey isn't that the song Richard Gere put on max volume as his limo came around the bend in his knight in shining armour scene for Julia Roberts. The funny thing is those specific lyrics from the opera only appear once but made so hugely well known by that popular movie. Also, interestingly enough, the storyline of the main characters in Pretty Woman and La Traviata are quite similar. A respectable man falls in love with a prostitute and changes her life forever.
La Traviata follows the love story of Parisian courtesan Violetta who becomes the love interest of Alfredo. Of course there has to be some drama because what love story doesn't have that - with their admiration for one another broken apart by family, their individual lives take new shapes and desperate longing. Violetta and Alfredo's relationship has some heavy codependency problems with some rather life or death lyrics to support it, but I guess that's the opera in general.
The Atlanta Opera puts on a beautiful performance with rich, grandiose settings, full of flair, colorful costumes, and a cast of larger than life voices. A huge stand out is Violetta played by Mary Dunleavy who deserves a standing ovation each night she performs this role.
