Atlanta murder rate: Zone 1 highest in city

Atlanta murder rate: Zone 1 highest in city

In Zone 1 of Atlanta, the approximate 19 miles of territory that stretches from West Marietta Street (near Western/Eastern Railroad) to Southeasterly directions that include North Ave., Gay St., Western Ave., Northside Dr., I-20 SW and to the city limits, as well as further north to Louisville and Nashville, there had been a total of 20 murders for this year, as of Sept.

That's the highest number in any other law enforcement zone of the southern city, and it exceeds the 18 total murders that occurred in the same geographical area for last year through the same time period.

Zone breakdown rates

Atlanta's murder rates are broken down per zone in police reports, enabling law enforcement leadership to better understand crime dynamics for each part of the city and to allocate resources accordingly. And the APD COBRA Report is made available for citizen access online, so I recommend you utilize it.

Other zones with similar murder rate numbers as Zone1--Zones 4 (16 murders), Zone 3 (14) and Zone 5 (10), respectively--are still lower than Zone 1 stats.

And Zones 2 (with only 2 murders) and Zone 6 (with 7) have the fewest murder rates in the city, overall.

Atlanta murder rates increased from last year

All the Atlanta zones have experienced an increase over the prior year's stats, slightly. But interestingly, at the same time, Zones 1, 3 and 4 had an actual decrease in shooting incidents and shooting victimization during this same period.

But these particular types of crime (shooting incidents) still far exceeded in number the total number of murders that occurred in each of these zones.

For example, Zone 1 might have had 20 total murders to date, but law enforcement responded to as many as 62 actual shooting incidents in that area, with 72 individuals becoming actual shooting victims for the period who managed to live.

Thus, it is a testament to the Atlanta Police Department, therefore, that the total number of murders that occurred was only one-fourth the total numbers of victims of such violent crime. Prompt response time by law enforcement had to play a positive role in aiding victimization to be limited to physical harm that did not lead to death.

The number of murders occurring in the city of Atlanta altogether thus far has reached 69 for all zones combined. That is in keeping with other cities of comparable size and traffic. But Atlanta law enforcement leadership is striving to reduce it even further.

Unlike some law enforcement agencies, such as Nashville, the APD keeps current crime data on their website for immediate access by citizens. Nashville's data is more than a year old, prohibiting citizens from determining for themselves if crime is growing, declining or becoming more prominent in one zone over another.
