ATLANTA -- Time flies when you're having fun. And the Atlanta ladies who enjoyed shopping for upscale clothing at Bloomingdale's since it opened at Lenox Square Mall a decade a go were treated to a soaring in-store event Thursday night to reward them for their patronage.
Though the invited VIP list was limited to about 200, the women's designer showroom was flooded with shoppers from other departments wondering what all the clamor was about. The affair was fueled by watermelon and vodka cocktails and hors-d'oeuvres that ranged from smoked artichokes to mushroom pate to peppered chicken and grilled Gruyere cheese bites.
The highlight of the evening was a formal runway show featuring the latest designs from the mother-daughter team behind the Grayse label. They're best known for establishing and running the prestigious St. John label, with Marie working behind the scenes and Kelly serving as the brand's CEO and principal model.
After stepping down from their respective posts at St. John in 2005, Marie and Kelly launched their looser, lighter Grayse label at the dawn of 2013. The Fall/Winter collection debuted at the Bloomie's Lenox 10th Anniversary affair was youthful and luxurious.
Attendees seated or standing around the runway literally howled when models where neutral-toned nylon parkas and vests unzipped them and reversed them to reveal their ribbed fur alternative look.
The looks were mainly shaded in black, brown and gray with a few splashed of violet or red, and epitomized casual elegance for the woman who rarely has to walk further than the distance from the valet stand to the airport or restaurant entrance. The Grayse separates, gowns and outerwear are generally priced between $200 and $1,100. Cuffed silk shorts, bejeweled jerseys tops without sleeves and skintight jeans figure heavily into the Grayse Fall/Winter mix.
"This is only our second collection, but it's already being received so well," said Marie Gray. "And the business operation is working so smooth. So we're very optimistic going forward."
