No one who loves contact sports can say they haven`t admired the athletic ability of wrestlers. Whether or not you follow wrestling or believe it`s bouts in the ring to be real; the sheer athletic ability and training required to be a wrestler is admirable. Atlanta resident and wrestling legend Abdullah the Butcher was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this week. Touted as one of the most violent wrestlers in history; Abdullah the Butcher has been a household name for several decades and his fans are loyal to this day.
Abdullah the Butcher stated his career at 17 years old in 1958. The Butcher stood 6 ft tall and weighed 441lbs when he stepped into the ring and all who stood before him feared his size and power. He was known as a rule breaker and his bouts were always bloody. He became known for his famous “Fork” that he carried into the ring and stabbed his opponents with. Whether a person conceders his acts to be real or completely staged his showmanship and appeal to his fans cannot be denied.
Originally from Canada “The Madman from Sudan” as he was sometimes called was able to sell out venues in many different countries. The Butcher has wrestled in every market in the world and was successful at bringing out huge crowds. Today he owns and operates his famous restaurant “Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food” with locations in Atlanta and Japan. His famous appetite for fish heads, announcer’s ties, and chicken heads have now turned to Gourmet food.
With the advent of the UFC and MMA, wrestling and boxing have taken a back seat in contact sports. Boxing especially has seen a fall in fanfare and advertising revenues. Wrestling continues to produce a following as most that enjoy it cannot walk away from the latest drama portrayed in the ring.
