One of my favorite places on earth is the island of St. John. If you are more interested in fabulous beaches and breathtaking scenery, than nightlife, then St. John may be the vacation spot  for you!  St. John is located in the Caribbean Sea and is a district of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory of the United States. The island of St. John is located about 4 miles east of Saint Thomas, the location of the territory's capital, Charlotte Amalie, and 4 miles south and west of Tortola,  It is 19.61 square miles in area, and has a population of about 4,500 . Since there are no airports on St. John, the only access to the island is by boat. The ferry service runs hourly from St. Thomas. You can fly direct from Atlanta, Georgia to St. Thomas on Delta Airlines!

Another positive point - St. John has regular ferries from the island that connect to Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Tortola. It'[s easy to 'island hop' on the ferries if your base is St. John. Approximately 60% of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park. St. John is laid back, gorgeous, pristine and a hiker and beach lover's delight.

St. John has hiking trails that will provide you with a variety of terrains, outstanding views of outlying islands and you will often end up on sugar, white sand beaches. The National Park  is renowned throughout the world for it's natural beauty.  One of my favorite park hikes is to Honeymoon Beach and also the Ram Head Trail. Snorkeling is stellar and exciting; you can snorkel from the shore in many spots since reefs are close to shore. We saw an eagle ray, octopus, turtles, starfish and many schools of angelfish in a spot on Sand Pond Beach.

Places to stay range from resorts like the Westin, to Villas and funky, cool bed and breakfasts. There are also a wide range of restaurants, from beach bars to elegant island dining.  There are more water activities and day sails than you'd ever want to do. I highly recommend doing at least one day sail if you are a sailor at heart.  Go to as many beaches as you can. They are all a little different.
