Atlanta Falcons have bigger needs than Darrelle Revis

With free agency nearing and the recent release of three key starters, the Atlanta Falcons have become an all but certified rumor mill. A mill which as of March 3, 2013, churned out recent speculation that the Falcons might make a push for New York Jets corner Darrelle Revis.

Looking back, the earliest rumors of Atlanta making a move for Revis date back to early January, when he was spotted wearing an Atlanta Falcons hat.

Rumors which were only further substantiated when Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports hinted that the Falcons could be a potential landing spot on February 27.

Don’t be surprised if Atlanta, which came tantalizingly close to beating the 49ers in the NFC championship game this year, makes a run at Revis.

While a greater sense of urgency at cornerback could creep into play with the release of Dunta Robinson and just how much money Brent Grimes is asking for, it's far more likely that Atlanta will address it's needs at the position through the draft. It is still unclear as to whether or not the team will re-use it's franchise tag on Grimes this offseason.

That said, even if the Falcons were interested in pursuing Revis, Pat Kirwian of CBS Sports recently put out a fantastic piece on why it will be difficult for any team to trade for the 27-year-old regardless.

Finally, a trade could happen if Revis lowers his demands, the Jets lower their demands, and a trading club doesn't want to wait for him to come free in 2014. Revis had 14 interceptions in his first three years in the NFL and five picks in the last three years. I might want to use my draft picks on young players, watch Revis in 2013 to see if he shows up with his present contract and plays well coming off the ACL. If all goes well, then get in a bidding war for his services in 2014.

Not only does Kirwan make sound points, but Atlanta clearly has chief concerns elsewhere. Including needs at defensive end, running back, tight end, linebacker and along its offensive line. And with roughly $20 million dollars in cap for free agents and to re-sign their own, every draftpick this year will matter.

With that, let's all take a deep breath and realize that sometimes certain luxuries are not needed. Revis Island is that luxury.
