In the wake of their shocking loss to the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, there was more bad news for the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday afternoon, when the team announced that star wide receiver Julio Jones may be lost for the season with a foot injury.
Atlanta head coach Mike Smith said that Jones will seek a second opinion on the injury Wednesday.
“He saw our doctors this morning,” Smith said, according to the team’s official website. “He is going to have a second opinion tomorrow over in Charlotte, North Carolina. The first reports were not encouraging, but we will wait to see what the second opinion comes back as.”
Jones has been one of the few bright spots on an otherwise disappointing Falcons team that has started 1-4 just one season after reaching the NFC Championship game. His 41 catches lead the league after five weeks of play and his 580 receiving yards are second in the NFL.
It was unclear when exactly the injury occurred, but Smith the team had "pretty much pinpointed when it happened" and believed it was before his spectacular one-handed catch in the fourth quarter. Jones finished the game with 99 receiving yards in the 30-28 loss.
