'Atlanta Blooms' at the Atlanta Botanical Garden this March

Forget the gloom and cold by feasting your eyes upon the third annual "Atlanta Blooms" found in the Atlanta Botanical Garden this March from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday-Sundays.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution announced on Monday that as many as a quarter-million bulbs will be on display throughout the blooming season this year. And while the AJC mentions hyacinths and crocuses, there will be more exotic fare as well, including Cattleya amethystoglossa, Japanese Pussy Willow, Nun's Orchid, and Schomburgkia splendida in February.

Algerian Iris, typically lavender-blue, with yellow to orange markings on the falls, will be prominently displayed in bloom in March, as will the Daffodil, the Desert Rose, the Don Egolf Redbud, Paper Brush and Winterhazel according to the Atlanta Botanical Garden's website.

The colorful expanse of blooming flowers spans a 30-acre attraction site located in Midtown at 1345 Piedmont Ave., Atlanta. And the viewing and event opportunities available throughout the year make it enticing to become a member by paying a one-time fee versus the cost for daily adult tickets.

Members of the Botanical Garden receive free unlimited admittance for 12 months, as well as free and reduced admission to special Atlanta Botanical Garden events for the $69 annual fee.

Invitation to member-only events and exhibition previews are included. And, of course, discounts at select area garden centers are enjoyed by members, as well as reciprocal privileges with as many as 200 other gardens, arboreta and conservatories.

Daily adult ticket cost is $18.95; ticket cost is $12.95 for children ages 3 to 12, and children under age 3 get in for free, as do Garden members.

Regardless of member status, however, all guests can take advantage of knowledgeable volunteer garden guides to provide insights during a tour of the blooms at no charge between Tuesday-Thursday with paid garden admission.

The guided volunteer tours run from 1:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m., and they meet at the Hardin Visitor Center exactly five minutes prior to the tour start time on Tuesdays-Thursdays.
