When the dog became associated with functions that society found shocking and unacceptable (dogfighting), the perceptions of the dog changed........the dogs became the villians, as did the Bloodhounds that were merely functioning in the roles in which humans placed them. Others are:
    Newfoundland, Doberman, German Shepherd

The German Shepherd was banned in Australia in the '30.
The Rottweiler was the "bad" dog in the '80.
Doberman had the reputation of a vicious animal in the '70.
In Germany all "pit type dogs" need a special license and have to undergo the questionable behavior testing. That includes the American Bull dog and Rottweiler, and all dogs without permit are confiscated and killed by the State.

If you were to list all dog breeds vilified in the media prior to ‘pit bulls’, you could generate a pretty long list, so I only asked for three. For example, any three of the following would have been correct, though there are others: Bloodhound, Newfoundland, German Shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler, or Spitz.
