Atheists rally for sanity

Over the weekend, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert hosted the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. As previously reported, atheists from around the nation met up at the event as a way to find like minded people of reason and so they could encouraging others to come out of the atheist closet.

The plan was to meet up at the Navy Memorial and march toward the National Mall together under the United Coalition of Reason (UnitedCoR) banner. The crowds at the rally were far larger then anticipated and there are estimates that there were between 200 to 250 thousand people. Many people had trouble with their cell phones due to the large number of people trying to access the network. This made it difficult for some people within the greater atheist community to make it to the Navy Memorial on time. Still, many did make it to the UnitedCoR banner.

The atheist gathering at the rally was not without criticism from some in the religious community. This is of course expected. After all, every time a local Coalition of Reason puts up billboards advertising their groups it becomes hugely controversial. UnitedCoR director, Fred Edwords defends both the billboard campaign and the rally gathering in this Washington Post’s “On Faith” article.

Some of the signs atheists had at the rally can be viewed through the slideshow feature in the sidebar.
