Christopher Hitchens has been and continues to be one of the most vocal and articulate voices within the greater community of reason. Despite being diagnosed with throat cancer, Hitchens has continued to debate Christian apologists, make public appearances, and publish great articles. It is true that his condition has deteriorated and his public appearances have become more infrequent, but he still continues to inspire atheists. So the reddit atheist community has created a living tribute to Christopher Hitchens.
“Hopefully, he will live for many, many years. But we all know Hitchens is gravely ill. We also know Reddit will be deluged with tributes the moment he has passed. What if we didn't wait until then?
No one knows better than this community that once you're gone, you're gone. Surely we can brainstorm a way to publicly show our appreciation for one of our greatest advocates while he is still here. Something to let Hitchens know what a positive role he's played in so many people's lives.”
What they came up with was to have people make a video to let Christopher Hitchens know how much we appreciate and love him for everything he has done for the cause of reason by “raising a glass” in his honor. This is particularly fitting since Hitchens is well known for his drinking and often times after a debate, book signing, and/or public appearance, he would often go out with local atheists for a drink and some great conversation.
Check out the compilation of some of the videos posted in the sidebar. Feel free to make your own video “Raising a Glass to Hitch” and letting him and everyne else know how much he changed your life or inspired you. Let this also be a reminder to us all that we shouldn’t wait until someone is dead before we appreciate them. Tell those you love and care about that you love and care about them now, while they are still alive to hear it.
