Somebody’s picking a fight in Deland, Florida. This 131 year old city has had the same seal since its inception; a heart, anchor and cross. It’s the cross that’s stirring up trouble for this quaint Florida town.
Last month an ‘anonymous’ complaint came in from an atheist who said the symbol, namely the cross, made him feel like a “second class citizen”. Jumping to his defense is the local chapter of ‘Americans United for Separation of Church and State’ who demanded the seal be changed. Rabbi Merrill Shapiro is the President and spokesperson who is leading the charge.
City officials are fighting back. This age-old seal is symbolic for the city, which can be seen all over town. Recently the City Attorney noted the outpouring of support to keep their seal as it’s always been. In a Fox News broadcast, this statement was read from a letter by the City Attorney in rebuttal to a possible lawsuit: “I would also like to point out, as a purely practical matter for your consideration, the city has been flooded with offers of support, legal and financial from organizations across the country. If your organization chooses to file suit against our city, we will have these resources at our disposal. There will be no lack of will or financial support in defending the continued use of our seal.”
The Constitution and law are on the side of the City of Deland its beloved seal. Nothing will change for now.
