Fede Alvarez Uroguay, was contacted by multiple Hollywood studios after uploading his short sci-fi video "Ataque de Panico!" to YouTube in November 2009. Just a month later it was reported that director Sam Raimi had offered Alvarez a $30 million contract to turn the 4:48 minute long video in to a motion picture.
The video "Ataque de Panico," which translates to "Panic Attack!", was filmed on a $300 budget back in 2006. It took six months to complete the project that Alvarez directed and animated. In the video, giant robots stomp towards Uruguay's capital city Montevideo as panicked citizens run for their lives while others stand in awe. The massive robots, accompanied by a swarm of flying saucers, then demolish the city's landmarks and buildings as the saucers chase down fighter jets. At the end of the video, one of the robots transforms itself into a metallic building. Some have compared the video to "Transformers" or "District 9". The soundtrack for the video was provided by the band Snake from Uruguay. There is also a YouTube music video with Snake that accompanies the song (of the same name) using the clips from "Ataque de Panico."
Alvarez said that he uploaded the video on a Thursday and by the following Monday his "inbox was totally full of e-mails from Hollywood studios." In the month that the video has been on YouTube, it has received nearly 2 million hits. You can see the original video and more by Fede Alvarez on his YouTube channel "fedalvar."
