AT&T, which has been ranked as the 2nd most successful carrier in the Los Angeles area, has upped their upgrade fee from $18 to $36. They have started sending emails about this decision to their customers and various retail outlets. Many people are outraged.
AT&T claims that the new fee is a response to costs associated with upgrading equipment, but Los Angeles Industry Analyst Paul Mueller calls foul play. "That's the lamest excuse I have ever heard of," Mueller claims. "The cost to upgrade a customer to a new handset and plan is actually less than fifty cents."
Perhaps the extra $18 isn't too bad since AT&T has really been putting money into improved speeds and customer service. Their 3G speeds have been ranked the fastest in the country.
