In a May 15, 2014 press release, IDW Publishing in partnership with Activision announced that they will publish the first ever comic book based on the immensely popular video game “Skylanders.” The series will debut at July’s San Diego Comic-Con with a 16 page “Zero” issue which will provide a first look at some of the new Skylanders coming in the next game in the series, “Skylanders Trap Team.”
The series is a no-brainer for fans of the three console games already out from Activision, “Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure,” “Skylanders: Giants,” and “Skylanders: Swap Force.” With an immense cast of colorful and exciting characters that come with well-developed personalities and snappy catch-phrases the world of Skylanders is ripe for further development in a narrative medium.
The video games combine all-ages game play in varying degrees of difficulty with a plethora of figures to collect and play in the game. Each character has its own back story and power set which provides hours of entertainment constantly making the same video game feel fresh and new.
The “Skylanders” series will be written by comic book veteran Ron Marz (“Green Lantern,” “Silver Surfer”). The lead artists for the series are two of the up and coming super artists in comics Mike Bowden (“BubbleGun”) and David Baldeon (“Nova”).
The series is in good hands at IDW Publishing who made a splash last year by acquiring the licenses to the Cartoon Network library and publishing such popular comics as “Ben 10,” “Samurai Jack,” and “Power Puff Girls.” These new titles followed the tremendous success that IDW enjoys from “Transformers,” “G.I. Joe,” and the mega-hit “My Little Pony.” It is their ability to tap into the younger readership that makes the publisher the right home for the “Sklanders” characters.
Activision Vice President of Global Licensing and Partnerships Ashley Maidy had this to say of the partnership:
“We are thrilled to be combining “Skylanders,” the pioneer of the toys to life video game genre, with IDW, one of the industry’s leading comic-book publishers in the U.S. The comic-book series will offer fans a glimpse into the backstories of their favorite Skylanders characters, expanding on the universe that they’ve embraced so enthusiastically in the franchise’s short history. To explore the world of Skylands beyond the game is an opportunity we know our fans have long been awaiting, and we couldn’t be more excited to see this manifested through a comic series.”
IDW’s Managing Editor and Editor of the "Skylanders" series added this to the announcement:
“The idea behind creating a “Skylanders” comic book series resonates strongly with us on so many levels – the storyline and audience appeals to the comic book world and feels like a seamless relationship. We’re honored to be the publisher of choice to introduce the world of “Skylanders” into the comic-book landscape.”
The comic series will be available digitally through all of IDW’s digital partners day and date of release for those that cannot make it to the comic book shop or the sold-out San Diego Comic-Con. So no matter what format you read your comics there is a way to get your hands on it.
