One thing that no one likes when the weather gets cooler is the itchy dry skin that comes with it. It as if the minute the days start to get cooler your skin decides to shrivel up and become an irritated and flaky red mess that can sometimes get out of hand. Just like you pay extra attention in the summer to ensure that you're skin stays radiant and well hydrated you also need to take extra care of your skin in the cooler months.
Dry flaky skin is the result of an inadequate amount of oil produced by our skin that is essential in our skin's hydration. Because the quantity of oil that is produced is lower than normal, our skin can become red and itchy and, sometimes, it may bruise. (Source: Become Gorgeous) Because we don't want our skin damaged then we need to ensure that it remains properly hydrated. Here are some great at home skin remedies to combat dry skin.
-Use olive oil to soften rough elbows, feet dry hands and generally all over your body to combat dry itchy skin. Olive oil contains antioxidants and fatty acids that are good for your skin to keep it properly hydrated. You can also mix olive oil with lemon juice and rub it into your skin before bedtime for soft skin. For an easy body scrub mix olive oil with lemon juice and sea salt.
-Exfoliate your skin. By exfoliating your skin your slough off any excess dead dry skin that can make your skin look dull. Make your own scrub using Greek yogurt because it exfoliates using lactic acid instead of rough beads and mix it with papaya for a conditioning scrub.
-Use a soapless cleaner when you're in the shower. Gentle baby soaps that are fragrance and additive free are great since they don’t contain any harsh chemicals that will dry your skin out. If not use a soap that contains ceramides since they create an outer barrier on your skin to protect it.
-Honey is great for softening skin in the cooler months. You can apply it to your lips for dry chapped lips, it can be mixed with coconut oil and used on the body to soften the skin or just use it alone all over the body and then rinse off after a few minutes.
-Consider taking Omega 3 pills. Studies have shown that Omega 3 can help to soothe dry skin. If you find that your skin is always dry you may consider trying this out. Results may take a few weeks to notice.
-Invest in an aloe vera plant. Aloe is a great all natural moisturizer. Don't worry about ruining the plant when you cut off a stem since it will seal itself and continue growing. Aloe is great for protecting the skin also and keeping impurities out.
-Bananas, eggs, avocados and cucumbers are also natural foods that are great for keeping your skin soft and hydrated. You can make masks out of them alone or combined and then placed either on the skin or on your face to nourish them and keep them hydrated.
