ASUS RT-N66U: Don't buy this router, lots of problems

See also

A couple of weeks ago, I shelled out $200+ dollars to buy the ASUS RT-N66U dual-band, wireless-N900 gigabit router. My experience has been a nightmare. Stay away from this product!

This brand new router stopped working (power button just blinks and the router refuses to reset) just a few hours after I installed it in our home office. Thus, it's $200 down the drain because the mall retailer I bought it from would only do refunds or exchanges within 7 days.

ASUS RT-N66U

What pissed me off was that the salesman made all these ridiculous claims about the RT-N66U: That the signal is good for up to "500 meters" to use his exact words. He also claimed that the signal would "go through walls".

From my experience, none of these claims were even remotely true.

Here's what happened:

  1. I installed the router in Nov. 2013 in an office building next to our house. A cable runs from a modem in our house to the adjacent office building. The home router (Cisco Linksys E1200) works just fine so this was not an ISP provider issue.
  2. The ASUS RT-N66U had poor signal to my Toshiba laptop even though my device was only 10 feet away. Its signal only had one bar and showed "poor connection".
  3. If my laptop did manage to connect, the Internet would keep on stopping every few seconds. There would be connectivity problems at almost every 5-second interval.
  4. Yes, I upgraded the firmware. Then I tried installing the router in our home and placed the Linksys router in the office. The RT-N66U just stopped working and its reset buttom became unresponsive.
  5. In terms of temperature, the router also gets very hot after a few hours. Several times a day, I had to turn it off as well as unplug our modem just to reboot our wifi connections.

Bad Router

Mind you, this is a new router fresh off the box. It doesn't even work.

The retailer said that I can no longer exchange this product because it's been 2 weeks since I made the purchase.

This attempted install has been one of the most frustrating technology experiences of my life. I read ASUS' manual. I followed the instructions. The RT-N66U just sucks.

Unreliable Internet Connection

On its website, ASUS claims that this router has "gigabit ethernet ports for the fastest, most reliable Internet performance."

If you're a consumer, stay away from it. From my experience, it was hardly fast or reliable. My laptop couldn't even connect from just 10 feet away.

I resent the fact that this company made a hefty margin selling this terrible router. Quality control should have prevented its premature release into the marketplace.

If you're the product manager for the ASUS RT-N66U, I hope you're standing in an unemployment line.
