ASU students headed back to school last week with a new warning from police--they are cracking down on underage drinking. ASU is well known for being a party school, which includes excessive alcohol consumption by students, many of which are underage. For this reason, Tempe police are enforcing the legal drinking age in order to keep everyone safe.
The 2011-2012 school year began with the DUI task force on local streets, on ASU's campus and apartment complexes near the school looking for underage drinkers. Police warn, if caught drinking while under the legal age, students can end up with a citation and even in jail. Police want to send a strong message that underage drinking won't be tolerated, especially by freshmen.
"Don't break the law and consume alcohol if you aren't 21. You obviously have a lot more to lose than you have to gain, so the message is be smart, be safe and make good decisions," says Sgt. Luis Scichilone.
Police want to keep all students and residents in the area safe; therefore, police will also be keeping an eye out for people committing crimes that are commonly associated with drinking. Alcohol impairs a person's judgment, which can often lead to driving while intoxicated, sexual assaults, disorderly conduct and burglary. Police warn to play it safe and follow the law, or you may find yourself behind bars.
