Astros trim 40-man roster by three after outrighting Cedeno, King and Pendleton

Astros general manager Ed Wade announced Wednesday afternoon that the organization has outrighted pitchers Xavier Cedeno, Blake King and Lance Pendleton off of the 40-man roster.

Cedeno will become a free agent following the World Series, while King is going to be placed on Double-A Corpus Christi's roster.

Pendleton, a native of Kingwood, Texas, and product of Rice University, can elect to become a free agent due to a prior outright.

The 25-year-old Cedeno, a 2011 Texas League All-Star, had his contract purchased from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sept. 11.

He went 0-0 with a 27.00 ERA in three relief appearances for Houston after going a combined 7-9 with a 4.38 ERA over 137 2/3 innings in 35 games (22 starts) for Oklahoma City and Corpus Christi.

Cedeno, who inked a minor league deal with the Astros last offseason, finished tied for seventh in the Texas League with 110 strikeouts.

The 24-year-old King was claimed off waivers from St. Louis on May 26 and spent the remainder of the season at Corpus Christi.

He went a combined 2-2 with a 5.73 ERA over 55 innings in 50 appearances at Corpus Christi, Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis.

King posted a 0-2 record with a 3.76 ERA over 40 2/3 innings in 33 relief appearances during his time at Corpus Christi this season.

The 28-year-old Pendleton began the season as a Rule 5 Draft pick for Houston before being returned to the Yankees in Spring Training.

He spent the majority of 2011 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 3-4 record with a 3.11 ERA in 18 games (10 starts).

Pendleton made his major league debut with the Yankees on April 15 and wound up compiling a 3.21 ERA over 11 relief appearances before being designated for assignment on Sept. 6.

Houston claimed Pendleton off waivers three days later, as he ultimately finished the 2011 regular season at the big league level.

The right-hander struggled over four relief appearances with the Astros, going 0-0 with a 17.36 ERA and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

The Astros' 40-man roster now stands at 37.
