Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow announced Tuesday that Houston has designated shortstop Angel Sanchez for assignment.
The move enables the Astros to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, thus allowing the club to add recently-signed catcher Chris Snyder.
Houston has 10 days to decide on Sanchez' contract.
Sanchez, 28, hit .240 with a homer, 28 RBI, 10 doubles and 35 runs scored over 288 at-bats in 110 games for the Astros last season.
He made 41 starts at shortstop and immediately stepped up while starter Clint Barmes recovered from his fractured left hand.
Sanchez recorded 14 starts at second base and eight at third.
Houston received respectable production from Sanchez after acquiring him in exchange for catcher Kevin Cash on July 1, 2010.
He hit .280 with 25 RBI, nine doubles, four triples and 30 runs scored over 250 at-bats in 65 games for the Astros during the 2010 season.
Sanchez hired Burton Rocks as his agent this offseason.
"Angel is a tremendous talent with a unique skill set," Rocks said. "He's a great personality to match that, both on and off the field. I know how deeply he cares about the game and the fans.
"That's why it's a privilege to be his agent."
