The Houston Astros agreed to terms on a one-year, $432,500 contract Sunday afternoon with infielder Angel Sanchez, who hit .277 with 25 RBI, nine doubles, four triples and 30 runs scored over 250 at-bats in 65 games for Houston last season after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for veteran catcher Kevin Cash on July 1.
Sanchez, 27, has been dealing with a recurring intercostal strain since Winter Ball, but finds himself back on the field participating in batting practice, hitting off a tee and increasing his long toss.
He'll battle fellow infielders Matt Downs, Anderson Hernandez, Tommy Manzella and Oswaldo Navarro for an Opening Day roster this spring as a backup middle-infielder behind projected starters Clint Barmes (shortstop) and Bill Hall (second base).
The Astros still have one unsigned player in left-hander J.A. Happ, with the renewal deadline for player contracts being Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
