Astros activate LHP Escalona from 15-day DL

The Houston Astros activated reliever Sergio Escalona from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday after the left-handed specialist spent two weeks recovering from tendinitis in his left elbow.

Escalona, 27, threw a bullpen session last Saturday prior to the Astros' game against the Milwaukee Brewers and went on a brief minor league rehab assignment for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.

He struck out two over an inning of work in Oklahoma City's 4-3 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs at RedHawks Field at Bricktown.

He was available for use Tuesday night in Houston's 4-1 win at Pittsburgh, but manager Brad Mills elected to go with left-handed specialist Wesley Wright instead to face Pirates left fielder Alex Presley in the bottom of the eighth upon pulling ace Brett Myers.

Wright walked Presley, yet remained in the game to face Garrett Jones -- another left-handed hitter -- who flied out to right field.

Escalona is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 48 relief appearances while holding opponents to a .232 batting average for the Astros this season.
