Muhammad Ali the champion boxer (“I am the greatest!”) age 71 is a Capricorn with Leo rising. His symptoms developed over the years most likely the result of constant punching and slamming to the mat. Brain damage is a hazard that comes with the territory. It was eventually determined that he has Parkinson’s symptoms. He has trouble speaking (mumbles) and walking (shuffles). He has a bunch of squares and oppositions involving Sun, Aquarius Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Uranus but also a Grand Trine in earth that points to great wealth. His Sun and Moon are opposite Pluto and that has literally manifested in his chosen profession. Opponents in the boxing ring, see?
My mother was a Virgo with Sag rising. She was an active, healthy person who lived to age 80 and had PD for about ten years. Her symptoms became more difficult in the last fourteen months of her life. She had trouble walking, speaking and swallowing and she degenerated very quickly at the end. One of the drugs she took made her hallucinate. Her Aquarius Moon was square Jupiter her ruling planet. She had a T-square. Her Sun, Venus, and Mercury squared Saturn rising in Sag. Her Sun was also conjunct Neptune in Leo and square Mars in Gemini. Her Mars was opposite Saturn.
Squares to Saturn appear in all four charts. Note that squares present challenges in your life and can make you change your direction. Oppositions do as well but are exactly as the word implies. Something opposes you, fights you or stops you from doing what you want. People with Saturn squares may never develop PD or anything else but they may have a physical limitation or handicap. They learn to live with it. Polio, arthritis, car accidents, sports injuries, paralysis or the loss of a limb are good examples of Saturn.
These four charts also have afflictions in Aquarius or Gemini. Air signs have a connection to the nervous system, especially Aquarius and Gemini. Adverse aspects with the Moon, which rules the brain, Mercury, Uranus and Pluto can indicate problems. Mars is injury, inflammation or fever. Uranus is spasms, tremors, strokes or seizures. Neptune often brings about allergic reactions and drug problems. (Case in point: my mother had the Sun conjunct Neptune and had that unusual drug reaction. She saw all kinds of funny things.) Pluto can permanently cripple and transform the body. Pluto is connected to mysterious, hard to diagnose diseases and so is Neptune actually. Neptune can be a vague, nebulous influence. A person can have painful, debilitating symptoms and have a tumor, lupus or lyme disease for example and not know it. I knew one man who didn’t find out for well over a year that he had ALS. Another friend of mine had lyme disease for eight months before the doctors figured it out. If the person’s ruling planet is involved chances are greater for the onset of one of these conditions.
Karma has a strong underlying role to play in many cases. The person may learn a karmic lesson by experiencing pain, shame, frustration, being cooped up in a nursing home and so forth. It’s a kind of jail sentence. And if not then the person simply has to endure one last test before stepping through the door.
I believe that there are lessons for both the patients and the loved ones who see them through their suffering. These are patience, fortitude, compassion and endurance. Sounds a lot like Saturn doesn’t it? I came to understand these lessons around the time that my mother passed away. The person suffering has to be patient and brave for the last stretch of the race. You on the sidelines have to be patient with everyone involved, including the doctors, nurses and yourself. You have to be brave. You have to have compassion for your mother who is the one suffering. And if there’s any forgiving to be done, do that too. It’s your last chance. A couple of days after my mother passed, I heard her speaking in my mind. Now you are free! Go out and enjoy living the rest of your life!
This is lovingly dedicated to my mother who would have been 85 years old this week on August 28.
