Astral Cornucopia from 'Born of the Gods'

Astral Cornucopia is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards spoiled today Jan. 22, 2014 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert expansion set "Born of the Gods" in an article detailing the release notes for the set. This rare colorless mana fixer and accelerator scales in power depending on the price you're willing to pay in order to cast it.

Astral Cornucopia - XXX
Astral Cornucopia enters the battlefield with X charge counters on it.
Tap: Choose a color. Add one mana of that color to your mana pool for each charge counter on Astral Cornucopia.

As an artifact Astral Cornucopia can be played in any colored deck. You'll need to pay three mana in order to have X be one, and six for it to be two. Compare Astral Cornucopia to Chromatic Lantern. Chromantic Lantern allows you to tap your lands for any color of mana while Astral Cornucopia can potentially produce more than just one mana. Because Astral Cornucopia utilizes charge counters one idea might be to add more to it with cards like Coretapper or Energy Chamber.

Our beef with Astral Cornucopia is its rarity. Rare? Really? Everflowing Chalice was a common, with essentially double X as its casting cost (To be technical, it had a casting cost of zero and a kicker of two). While Astral Cornucopia can produce any colored mana its steep curving casting cost prevents it from reaching great heights until much later in the game whereas Everflowing Chalice can quickly accelerate your mana production. Astral Cornucopia just seems like it should be an uncommon, if nothing else than to appear more often in limited.

How will you use Astral Cornucopia?
