Hundreds of Assyrian activist marched the streets of the Chicago Loop to protest the recent murders of Christian in Iraq. The message, “Stop the killing. Stop the hate.” But many of the protesters understand that it will take a lot more than a march to change things.
Several days ago there was an attack on a church in Baghdad that killed almost 60 people and leaving many more injured. Since there has been another attack that involved roadside bombs near Christian’s homes that left at least 5 dead and 33 injured.
Sam Shamoun, an Assyrian activist in Chicago, says that “something has to be done for the persecuted Christian minority in Iraq, they can’t go on as sheep to the slaughter.”
Joseph Tamraz, chairman of the Assyrian American National Republican Coalition of Chicago, said “We are working with the Iraqi government, but unfortunately the Iraqi government hasn’t been established yet,” He says that the instability of the Iraq government is one of the biggest obstacles that must be overcome.
