The Associated Press poll also known as the "AP Top 25" let the Rams in for the first time in the regular season since the 1984-85 season when VCU finished 11th at season's end. They've been nationally visible this season since last November when they played in the Bahamas at the Battle For Atlantis which was a showcase of the nation's best teams...looking at the teams that played there it looks like an April college basketball list of teams contending for an NCAA title. Five teams, including VCU, who played there are in the top 25 of the AP Top 25. They are Duke, Minnesota, Louisville and Missouri. VCU lost two games in the 2012 Battle For Atlantis: to Duke and to Missouri and both by single digits.
VCU has been hovering around the edge of the AP Top 25 this season: last week which was week 10 of the poll the Rams were number 26. This week the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll put the Rams at number 19 which is up five spots from last week's number 24 ranking.
Butler University, who is a fellow Atlantic 10 Conference member, is ranked number 13 this week; they're ranked number 13 in each poll this week, week 11. Wichita State, who beat VCU last November for their only home loss this season is ranked number 30 in each poll.
Butler & VCU: Upcoming Games
Butler comes into Richmond on January 16, 2013 to play an A-10 conference game against the University of Richmond Spiders; VCU faces a difficult task on January 17, 2013 when they host St Joseph's in an A-10 match up.
The Rams 11-game winning streak will be on the line against the St Joseph's Hawks who many sports writers predicted was the most likely winner of the Atlantic 10 this season.
