Following President Obama's announcement of his plans to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the use and availability of high powered military style assault weapons, the NRA came out with adds accusing the president of being an “elitist.”
It would appear that the NRA's actions and position is based on unrealistic concerns and perceptions that the motivation behind stricter legislation in regards to assault weapons and tighter gun control policy, would be to “take their guns away.”
The question is, how far can one go with second amendment rights, the so called right to bear arms, when instruments of war are being used in the continued and repeated slaughter of American citizens on American soil?
When American schools are no longer safe havens for learning, and the NRA's proposed solution is to put armed security on campuses nationwide, why is it not sensible to institute tighter gun control measures in addition to what once would have been considered an unthinkable approach to keeping American schools safe environments for learning?
When authorities in Mexico are watching with extreme and keen interest the outcome of the U.S. gun control debate because tens of thousands of their citizens have been slaughtered with mostly American made weapons, does this not warrant further recognition of the need for simple common sense and reason?
It would almost appear that the attitude by gun rights advocates in this country could be that the problem might “go away” if more law abiding citizens are allowed access to firearms. One almost senses that right to bear arms might actually supersede the importance, safety and value of human life.
Could it not be assumed that weapons designed for purposes of war have no place in any other scenario other that the extreme violence of a battlefield environment?
What are these weapons doing in our homes, on our streets, and most unbelievably, in the hands of criminals and mentally deranged individuals? Can this be justified by the argument that people bent on obtaining and using these weapons will somehow acquire them anyway? Should the President simply stand by and do nothing when American citizens and now children are being killed in American schools?
