Assault weapons ban dropped from gun bill

The gun bill proposed by Democratic members of the United States Senate will not include a ban on assault weapons, as reported today by the Associated Press. The story reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced the assault weapons ban will not be included in the gun control legislation the senate will take up next month.

Senator Diane Feinstein, who has been promoting the idea, vows to submit the assaults weapons ban as an amendment to the gun bill next month.

The AP story reports this is likely the defeat of the assault weapons ban, “The decision, which was expected, means that the ban seems to stand little chance of surviving because of expected solid opposition from Republicans and likely defections from some moderate Democrats.”

The assault weapons ban is reportedly one of four gun control proposals that are being considered in writing the gun control bill the Senate will take up next month. The other ideas are expansion of federal background checks on firearms purchasers, increased penalties for illegal firearms sales an increase in school safety funds.

Commentators and pundits will likely regard this is a political victory for opponents of the assault weapon ban and likely site concerns of Democratic senators elected from Republican-leaning states that feared their reelection might be in jeopardy if they voted for an assault weapons ban as part of the Senate gun control legislation. Additionally, it appears there is no discussion of regulating the capacity of firearm magazines in the Senate bill, which was another idea that gun control advocates had suggested be included in the legislation. Many state legislatures are considering gun control legislation that includes assault weapons bans and limits on the capacity of firearm magazines.
